Prevention is always better than cure. There are a number of simple regular things you can look out for to keep your Holden running smoothly between service intervals.

Tyres:
Check air pressure weekly (including spare) to ensure safety, reduce fuel consumption and increase tyre life. Correct air pressures are shown on the tyre placard located in the driver’s door. Do not attempt to drive on a flat tyre more than is necessary to safely stop. Driving even short distances may cause irreparable damage. Tyres should be replaced when:

  • Cord or fabric is showing or tread indicators appear. Tread indicators appear as plain bars when only 1.5 mm of tread remains.
  • Tread or sidewall is cut, split or cracked and exposes fabric.
  • Tyre has a bump or bulge in it.
  • Tyre has a puncture which cannot be repaired because of size or location of damage.

Oil:
Oil levels should be checked weekly. Check level when the oil is warm, or when stopping for fuel. Use only specified, recommended grades of oil
outlined in the handbook. Oil that is too thin (low viscosity) will increase
consumption, so stick to specified grades. specified in your handbook is not recommended as they will not only increase operating costs but also may be detrimental to the operation of your vehicle.

Washer Fluid Levels:
Check and top up washer fluid weekly. For best results, add the correct amount of Holden washer fluid, as specified in your handbook.

Air-Conditioning (if fitted):
The air-con uses power from the vehicle’s engine, so you will notice a small decrease in power and a slight increase in fuel consumption when it is in use. Switch air-con on for 5-10 minutes once every two weeks (even in winter) to lubricate the air-conditioner system seals. A slight hissing sound may be heard for a short time when air is turned off - this is normal.

Engine Coolant:
Coolant levels should be checked at least weekly. If required, top up coolant, mixing a solution of Holden coolant and clean fresh water as per the ratio specified in your handbook. Do not top up coolant level beyond the maximum mark. If you find you’re having to top up cooling system more than every two weeks, see Eagers.

Other regular checks are detailed in your handbook.

Common Display Icons:

If ‘Low Coolant’ icon illuminates, engine coolant levels are dangerously low. Check levels as soon as possible. Icon will remain until the ‘Mode’ button is pressed. It will then appear as a small icon on the left of the computer display and will remain until the problem is rectified.

If the ‘Engine Temp Hot’ animation appears while driving, it means coolant temperature is dangerously hot. Stop vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. The icon will remain until the problem is rectified.

The ‘Check Engine’ icon will illuminate when a fault occurs in the electronic management system or the automatic transmission. The vehicle may still be drivable, but it’s recommended that you reduce loads and driving speed. The problem should be checked as soon as possible by your Eagers.

‘Air Bag’ and ‘Seat Belt’ pretensioners. The SRS icon is displayed when the ignition is first turned on to indicate that it is working. If the icon ‘SRS Airbag Fault’ graphic illuminates while driving it indicates that there may be a malfunction. You should see your Holden Retailer immediately.

If the ‘Check Oil’ icon and graphic illuminate when driving, oil pressure is dangerously low. Stop immediately, turn off the engine and check oil levels. Do the system checked at your nearest Holden Retailer.

If a ‘Service Reminder’ is active, it is displayed for 10 seconds or until the ‘Mode’ button is pressed. Refer to the service booklet in your glove box for details on service displays and actions.

The alternator warning light will illuminate when the ignition is first turned on. If the icon and ‘Check Alternator’ graphic illuminates while driving it indicates that the alternator is not charging properly. See Eagers.

The ‘Brake Fail’ and ‘Park Brake’ warning icon illuminates when the ignition is first turned on. If the icon and ‘Brake’ graphic illuminate while driving and the park brake is released, you have a brake fault. Stop immediately, as carefully as possible. Do not proceed until satisfied that braking is possible and have the problem checked by your Eagers at the soonest opportunity.

ABS - Anti-lock Brakes (if fitted) lights up for a few seconds when the ignition is switched on. If it does not go out or if it comes on during driving, there is a defect in the ABS. The car’s brakes will remain operational, but without ABS, so you should see Eagers as soon as possible.

Other warning indicators are listed in your handbook.
